Bike to the Festival via a Tour of New Sections of the Hank Aaron State Trail including the new Valley Passage and Old Soldier Home:
Join a free bike tour on the Hank Aaron State Trail to Lakeshore State Park. Learn about new sections of the Trail, the rich history of the area and tremendous changes that have reshaped the Menomonee Valley, all on a pleasant ride to the Gathering Waters Festival. Secure bike parking on the Park is available. Ride back to your car or home after you’ve enjoyed the Festival. No sign-up required. Contact Melissa Cook, DNR, at 414.263.8559 with questions. Date & time: Saturday, June 11th. Check-in: 9:00 a.m. Festival arrival: 11 a.m.
Location: Tour begins at the south end of the 76th Street Park & Ride lot north of State Fair Park.  Distance to Festival is approximately 6.5 miles.  For those less ambitious riders, meet us at the new bridge over the Menomonee River at 37th and Pierce, but you’ll be missing a beautiful section of the trail.
Parking: available at the 76th Street Park & Ride lot north of State Fair Park or along Canal Street.

BIKING: Get your bike inspected or helmet fitted. Learn how to change a tire and get info on Milwaukee’s bike trails and summer bike rides and groups.

BOAT DOCKS: Take a tour or go for a boat ride!
Research vessels: the Neeskay (71 ft, Great Lakes WATER Institute), the WG Jackson (65 ft., EPA), Gaylord Nelson (45 ft, DNR), the Peligos (43 ft, MMSD), Boomshocker fish assessment boat (20 ft, DNR)
Search and Rescue: Milwaukee Police and Fire Departments and the Coast Guard
Boat Rides: Pontoon rides from Performance Yacht and boat cruises with Skipperbud’s – both for a small donation.

FISHNG: Bring your pole or use one of ours and fish Lakeshore State Park’s lagoon with a rich variety of trout, bass, walleye and even pan fish. Able volunteers will teach kids. No license required for kids under 16 years of age.

FOOD: Great Milwaukee Food Carts: AV Concessions, Babes Bay View Ice Cream, Black Bear Soda, Cold Spoons Gelato, Cousins, Foodie Cart, Milwaukee Ale House Beer, Pita Bros., Satellite Crepes and TigerBite.

GEOCACHING: Check-out the Wisconsin Geocaching Association’s free “Geocaching 101” demo at noon and 3 p.m. in the Get Outdoors area. Learn about this new form of high-tech treasure hunting and go on a hunt for hidden geocaches using a handheld GPS navigation receiver. There are permanent and temporary geocaches are on the Park.

KAYAKING DEMOS WITH LAACKE & JOYS – Have you ever wondered what it felt like to float on top of the water in a kayak? Here’s your opportunity to test paddle and try kayaking for FREE. Their staff will assist you and provide boats, PFD’s, paddles. There will be dry-land and safetly clinics throughout the day on the beach. Wear fast drying clothing and water shoes. Check-out kayak fishing too!

GET OUTDOORS AREA: This area will feature exhibits with the following groups:
Adventure Rock – Test your skills to climb a rock wall
U.S. Forest Service – pick up a free seedling and visit with Smokey Bear and Woodsie Owl!
WI DNR – do activities with Havenwoods State Forest, pick up your State Park Guide and other important outdoor information
Dan Small’s Outdoors – check-out the latest in fishing and hunting news
Landscaping and Gardening: Learn simple things you can do to grow healthy and safe native plants, lawns and vegetables. You’ll see exhibits on composting, worm composting, collecting rain water, green roofs, rain barrels, rain gardens, native plants and more! Talk to the experts with Marek Landscaping, Earth Care Natural Lawns, Sweet Water Organics and UW Extension Master Gardeners
Laser Tag Anywhere: Get outdoors and play tag with laser guns.
Urban Birding: Lakeshore State Park is one of Southeast Wisconsin’s best places to see migrating birds. There’s also a great variety of birds who call the Park home. Go on a bird hunt with local experts and Bird City Wisconsin.
Other booths: Live animals, birds and reptiles, Wehr Nature Center, Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, Wisconsin Trails, WUMW and Present Music.

KIDS ACTIVITIES: Kids will love the variety of things to do and parents will love that there’s no cost! Check-out Art in the Park with Milwaukee Art Museum’s Kohl’s Color Wheel Van, live painters with ART Milwaukee, Discovery World’s Kohl’s Design It Van and more with Lynden Sculpture Gardens. Don’t forget to go fishing, fly a kite, climb a rock wall, go for a boat ride, learn how to kayak, get your bike inspected, get a bike helmet from Habush, Habush and Rottier and get it fitted (small donation requested). Boy and Girl scouts can use the Scout Guide to visit exhibits and do activities to help earn badges and recognitions and get fun ideas for summer.

KITE FLYING WITH GIFT OF WINGS: Set sail or learn how to fly a kite with a variety of kites that are provided for free and for purchase. See the giant octopus kite and other giant kites fill the sky!

MILWAUKEE WATERS AREA: Various groups will display interactive exhibits on topics ranging from Milwaukee’s three rivers to our Great Lake Michigan, from drinking water to wastewater treatment and from our beaches to the critters in the water. Successes, challenges and issues will be highlighted. Meet the scientists and researchers from Milwaukee’s own UWM Great Lakes WATER Institute – the largest freshwater research facility on the Great Lakes! Take a fly over Milwaukee’s Waters with Virtual Milwaukee.
